how neccessary is a protein skimmer

Thank you. I can't wait to be back too lol. I spent hours thinking should I? Should I not? and finally the answer came out clearly so I'm just gonna hold off for at least a few months. I might do a build thread and I will likely start on a 10-20g simple build and build up a saltwater basis. Starting a big tank is easir to maintain but if I'm careful and I'm not a complete beggeinner to fish just to salt so I should be fine.

I,too have found skimmers to be really effective for SW tanks - The last SW tank I had running (75G FOWLR) used only a skimmer for filtration and a couple powerheads for circulation.
