Hello,

I have a 125g aquarium with a Blue Zaire Moba Frontosa colony consisting of 7 fish ranging in size from 5 to 10". The tank is filtered with a single Fx5, with a modded spray bar and power head setup. I've had this setup running for around 5 years without any problems. I normally feed these fish every 3 days and it's been working out great. I moved out of the house and wasn't able to take the tank with me. Now my mom looks after the fish (feeding only), I still do the maintenance.

When I feed the fish I use to do it every 3rd evening around 7pm. The water was always nice and clean. This is the schedule that I wanted my mom to maintain, but she doesn't. Her routine is feeding them in the morning like you would a dog or cat. She turns the light on and starts to feed while the fish are still in a state of sleep. What ends up happening is very little food gets eaten and within a day or 2, the water quality is so bad that you almost can't see the other side of the tank end to end, and before you say it, no it's not a filtration problem.

I've been trying to tell her why I feed in the evenings (when the lights have been on for hours and the fish are active) vs feeding in the morning when the fish are still half asleep, and nothing I say seems to stick. I'm nearly at my wits end, to the point where I'm just going to throw in the towel and sell everything off and quit the hobby.

I'd like your opinions on this matter and no, I'm not asking you guys to side with me. Give some honest opinions on the topic. I'll have my mom read this once it gets enough responses.

Thanks for your time.

I totally agree fish eat better when fully active or food will sit on subrate until one of the greedy fish gets a whiff lol.

My twist is I actually have the lights on at night. It's dark enough in the daytime for them to sleep if they want to but to answer your question it is better to feed when the fish are active.

Now you know how your mom felt all those years after getting on you to do things when they should be done!

All kidding aside why not set the lights on a timer to go on like an hour before she would feed them in the morning

This is a good idea.

trying to get something into a Mother's head is like trying to talk the paint off walls. My DOGS listen better than my Mom. Might as well get a brick wall to feed your fish for you. There's a reason I started going bald at 25 years old. IME, Moms have about as much common sense as 4 year old with cerebral palsy

Rant over.

Yea mine drives me crazy too, Buddy.....and all my friends' moms do the same to them. You're not alone in this. Wives do the same thing. Do yourself a favor and stay single.

LOL Kittiee Katt Kittiee Katt in the hat should have some good input for this thread

What am I inputting? A mum rant or a partner rant? Or a rant about myself? All three seem viable with the current topic lol :P

just about how much parents don't listen and drive you crazy
Oh gosh we'll be here all day if I start on that...

Don't bother trying to talk to them, if you must try to get something through the "one way mind" of a parent, prepare a powerpoint presentation and three hour speech outlining what you're trying to get across, have expert references ready for your argument and be sure to use them. Hire a suit, draw diagrams and use pictures, speak in simple terms and get them to repeat the important things back to you (like they did when you were little), and be sure to end with "does anyone have any questions about what we've just learned?"

If all else fails, keep your head down in school, get a (preferably good) job as quickly as life allows, and get outta there! :P

Disclaimer: this is terrible advice (except the bit about school, that's good advice) please don't give your parents a lecture - but if you do, FILM IT! :P

no matter what he says and how long he says it, the chances of her listening to him are virtually nonexistent. They just DON'T listen......I swear to God no matter whether you are right or wrong they want to be oppositional and do the exact OPPOSITE of what we ask them. It makes as much sense as the Japanese continuing to kill whales JUST BECAUSE we don't want them to. It's all just one big power-trip to them - they HAVE to be in charge all the time regardless of how stupid and immature they look.

i'm done....i'm friggin done. I'm getting pissed off just thinking about it. My parents were so stubborn I had to start drinking just to deal w/ their bullcrap. It makes me sick to see grownass adults acting like that.
