How often and when to feed?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
trying to get something into a Mother's head is like trying to talk the paint off walls. My DOGS listen better than my Mom. Might as well get a brick wall to feed your fish for you. There's a reason I started going bald at 25 years old. IME, Moms have about as much common sense as 4 year old with cerebral palsy

Rant over.

Yea mine drives me crazy too, Buddy.....and all my friends' moms do the same to them. You're not alone in this. Wives do the same thing. Do yourself a favor and stay single.

LOL Kittiee Katt Kittiee Katt in the hat should have some good input for this thread
Bald works for me. Pimp on playa.

You might want to be selective about which post you show your mom. Unless the room is completely dark I don't see any issue with kicking on the light in the morning and feeding the fish shortly after. If I go fishing I like to have a line in the water at daybreak, that is when most fish are actively feeding. With the food building up and cloudy water, I would be concerned that she is in fact just overfeeding them. I am pretty sure my mom would think that it was cruel to feed them every third day and would either secretly feed every day or way overfeed on the third day.You could portion out the food for her in containers for the correct feeding days if that is an issue and try and explain how disasterous poor water quality can be to their health. If it is pre dawn or there is no natural light in the room when she gets up then I also like the timer idea.

Just set up small individual daily portions, that would be fine.
Last time I left and had my mom feed the fish (while on vacation) I came back to find my fish as fat as sumo wrestlers.

Alot of good responses here.

The timer idea wouldn't work and here's why. This tank is located in the basement where my retired father watches TV late into the night. My tank light is used as ambient light for the entire room. He'll watch TV sometimes as late as 3am. Then the tank light is shut off.

In the morning my mom will wake up sometimes early (if she has a reason to get up) or sometimes as late as noon. Depending on where the feeding days happen to fit in, the fish could be getting as little as 4 hours of darkness. As you can see there is no solid scheduling in the household

***My parents were so stubborn I had to start drinking just to deal w/ their bullcrap. It makes me sick to see grownass adults acting like that.*** (the quote tags don't wanna work for me, or I'm just dumb)

haha, yeah I can relate to that

that makes matters even worse since Frontosa are naturally nocturnal in the wild from what I understand

I'm nearly at my wits end, to the point where I'm just going to throw in the towel and sell everything off and quit the hobby.

I'd like your opinions on this matter and no, I'm not asking you guys to side with me. Give some honest opinions on the topic. I'll have my mom read this once it gets enough responses.

Let's see where to start:
1) you took in pets
2) you left your pets with someone else with no plan to take them with you
3) the "someone else" are adults
4) adults do what adults want to do

So, in all practical terms, the fish are not yours anymore, as you have abandoned them. Your mom is doing you a favor by feeding them, but you want to complain about how she is helping you.

You can:

a) ask your parents if they want advice and offer it if they say yes, and butt out if they say no;
b) sell the tanks and fish
c) come over and feed the fish every 3 days yourself

IMO, the most responsible thing to do is (c). If you can't do (c), then IMO you will need to pick (a) or (b).
