How often do bichir poop??

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Thanks for the info on hormones guys. I have learned quite a lot since I joined. I will definitely step up the wc schedule to at least one 50% per week.

Currently in the 180:

2 6.5" ornates
1 11" sen
1 9" faranah lap
3 4" clown loaches

Yeah, if shes got a belly bump I don't even try to feed her.
Shes uninterested if shes full.

I ask because im just startig to notice a steady amount of poop, ha.
She was on all feeder fish (previous owners)and now ive gotten her to eat a little tilapia and silversides.
Hikari is sending me a massivore sample to try to get her to eat that.

I couldnt get anyone to eat massivore until I started soaking it in bloodworm juice with a few drops of concentrated garlic until it gets mildly mushy. They LOVE that stuff.

I've seen a few people post about garlic now! What makes it attractive to the fish? The strong smell? Just seems like something that fish wouldn't normally eat ya know?
I used to give my rat garlic, and have given to my cats, for respiratory issues- so I know it can do lots of good! Just never heard of giving it to fish until I started on this site!

And I always email companies for samples! Animal food companies are always amazingly willing to send some out, since people are usually brand loyal with their pets.
Should've seen the gigantic sample pack I got for my parrot way back when!

Oh you couldn't be more wrong..... Absolutely nothing can eliminate the need for regular water changes. There is plenty of stuff the plants can't remove. Things like hormones (that can contribute to slower growth), minerals that will build up when added with evaporation replacement water and heavy metals from add water. I imagine there is other stuff. I would STRONGLY suggest you get some google going and educate yourself soon.
As far as the power feeding you talked about, that just increases the need for regular water changes. Also extremely fast growth contributes to a shortened lifespan.

I have gotten one single 20G long with three sponge filters, and a massive overgrowth of moneywort to support two Convict cichlids. I know that this is overstocked, and yet I have never had the nitrate reading go above 25 on my API test. Please note, that I DO still do water changes roughly 50% every other week. They have non-stop bred like (well convict cichlids).

I assume that I am replacing enough of the hormones built up in the water that would impede breeding with this grossly nearly non existent W/C schedule.

Note 2: I am in the top 5% largest average water change percent fish keepers here on MFK, and understand that I am way overkill at 70%+ W/C's per week on the average with all of my other tanks.

You would not believe the "limited" space in that 20G long tank with the 3 internal sponge filters and Moneywort choking the water column, and growing just as heavy as much as 18" above and down the outsides of the tank.

I see no way possible of achieving what I have in the tiny 20G long tank with any tank over 40 gallons.

Oh, you should see what I've got going on plant wise in and on my 180 right now :p
