1 male per 4-5 females, and you should have continuous breeding. 1 male per 1 female will get you perhaps 1 breeding a month if you feed them well and manually remove the fry from the female's mouth.

The bigger the harem, the more breeding that will take place....and the more that individual females won't get worn out from constant attention.

I like to keep 2m/6-8f in a 40g breeder / 55g.

Generally, I remove holding females to a separate small tank to hold for ~3 weeks...let them spit their fry...and condition (fatten them back up) for about a week before re-introducing them.
