How often do you clean your canister filters?

I have two XP4's and a wet/dry for my 180 gallon. I started 20%-30% weekly water changes as a good maintenance practice but the results were cloudy water for 4-5 days. When the water cleared, it was time for another water change.
Has anyone replaced the foam blocks with poly fiber material in your canister filter which resulted in clearer water?

In my bottom section I use fiber fill. $1.50 a bag from Walmart and lasts several changes. I also use the Bio-Chem Zorb carbon in the top section and it does a great job, I tried cheaper alteratives and wasn't happy with it. When I replace the foam pads, I remove the bottom one and put a fresh one on top.
