Armand, lets not forget there's mew members reading this thread and advising no filter maintenance for a year + isn't the best advice and that's why other people are frustrated with you! If your experienced, test your water and know the behavior of your fish sure you could disregard cleaning your aquarium equipment if nothing is dying but trust me when I say your playing with fire. If your filter is for mechanical and biological its simply the "heart" of your "eco system," and letting it go a year plus is great and all but like I said before flow is decreased and extra strain is placed on the motor/impeller, it could very easily overheat, short or just shut off....its an unnecessary habit that new FK's should not practice.

How hard is it too open up a filter a few times a year to check the unit, clean motor housing and impeller, change or clean filter padding and rinse Bio media in tank water? This not only ensures filter efficiency but also longevity, security and less risk of failure!

Acting proud that your filters been running for 8,760 + hours straight is odd imo.....

Damn, this thread is getting as mean natured as an NLS food thread!
Can we stop the name calling and be a little more civil?
What works for one of us, doesn't mean it works for the next guy. We all do our aquariums differently in some way. We have people that keep fish that require soft acid water to thrive, like Apistos. We have others that keep Goldfish. The needs of those two extremely different examples is why we have our fish setups and water chemistry different.
There is no right way to do this. There is the way that I have found that works for me. I hope this thread gets closed like an NLS thread. :o

That's correct!.

A couple of times I have started new setups and for reasons I am not going to mention now, I didnt cycled them nevertheless I didnt lose any fish. Does that mean that I advice not to cycle tanks?. Not at all.

I clean my hob every two weeks, otherwise it gets noisy, clogged, cuts off and causes my tank to go through a mini cycle... I clean the pads in rotation and the bio media when I notice a reduction in flow rate that isn't helped by cleaning the pads... when I clean filters that haven't been done in a while, they are disgusting and turn the water black... but that is just my experience and I know canisters are probably very very different

every 3 moths wither they need it or not, the time to do maintenance on anything is before it needs it.

well done... person is a person.. can't change the way they act or do... at the end just as i have put it.. happy Monster Fish keeping..

i clean a filter every 4-6 weeks, and i never wash all my filters at the same time to prevent the crashing of BB's colony, and i never wash bio media, the main efforts of filter cleaning go towards removing the sludge and hard water build up, as well as cleaning the impeller/pump
