How often do you siphon your substrate?

Was curious because I never used gravel til last week. Figured it would help my cichla feel at home. Did any of you notice your bass being less stressed out by adding substrate?

When you you add plants and gravel, it makes them feel more at home, instead of living in a bare bottom glass coffin.....Just my opinion.

That's what I was thinking! What type of gravel did you use?

I'm using pool filter sand and I noticed after adding a bunch of driftwood into my tank, my cichla were doing a lot better. Their markings are darker and they eat way more. They're not as skittish and come racing to the glass every time someone walks by. I siphon my sand every time i do a water change.

My filter picks most of it up I just stir the sand a bit once a week with the filter off then wait a minute or so and turn my filters back on.

I noticed that too! My kelberi isn't as skittish anymore.

I have sand an most of the poop goes to one side of tank so with a clear hose I just suck it off the top once a day takes 2 minutes

Anything mocking their natural environment is better and as fk that's what we try and do, hopefully.

Regular Top-Fin Black Gravel that I vacuum during every water change.
