How often do you test your water?

i started to do mine weekly when i got my 75. thats when i started getting serious with my fish keeping. before i bought whatever i liked when i went to the store. at the LFS i worked at, we did it daily and kepped a log on the results to monitor any changes. it helped alot so i started doing it at home. i log my weekly water changes. it helps me remember when i changed the filters, did WCs and monitor the temp on the pond throughout the year. i guess im a little to obsessed with my fish.
 
Thats not really an obsession toe ....more like responsable fishkeeping. You can fly by the seat of your pants for only so long but it will eventually jump up and bite you.
 
Only if something is wrong.. (cloudy water, fish behavior, fish loss..)

but that never happens.. I just change water..

hasn't happened....no such thing as never. and as a wise man once said...it only takes once...

I lost a black Piranna a couple of years ago who was 16 years old at the time. I wasn't home to monitor the water and the city had problems.
 
Yes I tested the tap water...thats why I built a 80 gph RO/DI system with a 6 stage pre-filter for all of our tank water. Massive clorimines and 485 ppm TDS out of the tap...I was putting more crap INTO the tanks at water changes than I was taking out.

If I was you, I would test my water too..

Some of us however, are blessed with quality water sources.. which maybe is a reason why you will hear varied opinions on testing water quality. My tap has 0 ppm Nitrates, and 0 ppm Ammonia, and an alkalinity of 120+ which makes the water here very stable..

Sorry to hear the loss about the Black P.. The city had a water source issue while you were unable to monitor it? You had someone else change the water for you? You should of taught him to test water.. :duh:
 
I was in the process of moving.... and yes the fish was under a relitives care at the time. Water quality varies a great deal not only location to location but from time to time as well. In this case a desert thunderstorm's massive runoff overwhelmed the water treatment plant and our normally good water quality went down the crapper. This is a fairly common occurance.
