Ultimately, my main concern with doing 50% water changes is an environmental one. I envision a future where water is fought over like oil and try as much as possible to minimalize my personal contribution towards said future.

Bit of a weird arguement that, shouldn't you just give up fish keeping totally? That would save a hell of a lot of water!
Water will never be fought over, it's never actually lost.

No, but it can be broken down into hydrogen and oxygen. It's the lack of clean, fresh water that is cause for concern among the scientific and environmental communities.

Not sure H2o can be un bonded...I think Steve is spot on... It is never lost..Even water vapor is still water. It would be over a billion years before the lack of water was a concern...We might live on Titan by then...lol

I only do 25% every week to two weeks. Depending on how the water tests and looks. I test it every 3 days or so.
I live in Northeast Ga and unless you live under a rock in the secluded wilderness of the Amazon you know that we have been under a VERY severe droubt for the past few years. I am on a well and we haven't had any rain (a few short showers) since I don't know when. My fish hobby concerns me at times for that reason.

You can absolutely break the hydrogen bonding of water. I am sure of this. The law of conservation of matter only states that matter cannot be created or destroyed. Breaking water down to its fundamental elements of hydrogen and oxygen is not destroying them, but rather reverting them to their simplest forms.

That is unfortunate! We've had way too much rain, and you folks in the Southeast can't get enough!

:ROFL::ROFL::ROFL:

Eh, we all fail from time to time! No biggie!

the BEST would be a 100% three times a day... but the least you can do and get away with is 50% a week. more is more:headbang2!

Oh yeah, the reason being that fish LOVE fresh water. in the native rivers etc they get billions of gallons of freshwater all around them in a tank as much freshwater as possible does not go to waste!
