how often should i clean canisters?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have 2 eheim 2217 on a 57g and I clean them about every 3-4 months. Very light stock and they didnt NEED to be done last time but I was changing up the number of filter pads so I figured why not

I cleaned an FX5 last month that was last cleaned last Sep or Oct. Really I should say I opened it and put it back. Since I have been dosing with Rid X my filters stay exceptionally clean. I did a 2262 about the same time with nearly the same results that had been running longer but had to change the quilt batting.

How much rid x do you use? I know it is an organic solution (with good bacteria) for declogging drains and toilets, but weren't you worried the first time you used it? I would be a bit nervous using anything that was meant for opening up clogged sinks...But I am interested in hearing more if that's ok? What kind of results have you gotten? Thank You!

I use mostly aquaclear hob's(as close to canisters as hob's get)...I TRY to get the entirety of my filtration cleaned once a month

There is a whole thread about this under fish diseases and health in the stickies. It is not used to unclog a drain! It is bacteria to help clean up fish waste. It is listed as a sticky regarding probiotics.

Oh ok ,I will look that sticky up. It's just that when I googled it, I saw that it is sold as a septic treatment. But will read more about it. Thanks...lol...as long as it is not made with lye (which it is not) JK, cause that would definitely cause some Hole in the Head
