How old are your red bellies

You're dumb, Eddie. That's why you fail to see the connection.. My point was that someone DID get the joke.

Real quick, I'm no priahna guy but the LFS near me has a lone seemingly pure RBP in a 30 gallon display. It says its 20 years old but only 6 inches long? Is that thing stunted? haha

Either the lfs is lying or they have no idea the piranha's actual age. But yes it's stunted.

As mn said, its stunted. A RBP would reach 6 inches after 8-11 months. Is it thick at least? I believe some of these pet stores and aquariums have display tanks they've had for a long time but you won't find too many in the home aquaria with 1 owner

Eh, probably thick enough to fit my thumb in its mouth. They are illegal for hobbyists where I live, so they have a display permit for it. From what I've gathered, my friend has been going there for a long time but I've never went before that. He would go for reptile stuff, they have the biggest rept selection around and a pretty big fish room so I tagged along to check things out, other then a dying "freshwater" moray that was the coolest thing. It was all like, AF, SA and CA cichlids... not even cool ones either, no umbee, festae, or even FH. No other preds. I get the feeling the person taking care of it either

A) simply doesn't give a flying poo
B) is misinformed
C) or is lying and the old one died and they replaced it? I wouldn't be surprised, I would honestly be surprised if its alive next time I'm there, and if the tank is actually a 30, looks almost like a 20 long.

I'm gonna blow a gasket on that manager next time I'm there and make a scene lol. "REALLY GUY?! A PIRAHNA IN A 30?!" Hahaha I love doing that to people who are screwing up and just don't want to fix it. I've done it a couple times around here. Like when I saw a 14 inch silver aro in a 75 for display, and I asked them if they were moving it to a bigger tank and when they said no its fine in there for life I flipped haha

the smallest tank I used for a sub adult p (about 8-9")was 40B, room wise it's not too bad but the tough part would be keeping the water parameter in check with the small water volume.

is there any method to get to know piranha's approximate age ?
I've seen 8 years old piranhas (according to their owner) and they have no red color on their bodies at all. 7-8 inches.
Some aquariums sell these fish as black piranha because their bodies are dark, if a person doesn't know how to identify a black piranha, they may buy these RBP as rhoms.

HOW TO TELL AGE OF YOUR PIRANHA

All fish scales, however, are not alike. There are four major groups, one of which is comprised of cycloid and ctenoid scales. The ctenoid variety have a comb-like, spiny posterior edge, their name developing from the Greek word cteno, meaning comb. Conversely, cycloid scales have a smooth posterior edge as their name from the Greek cyclo, meaning circle, implies. Both types of scales, however, consist of two main regions; a rigid surface layer chiefly composed of calcium-based salts, and a deeper fibrous layer consisting mainly of collagen. Fish scales were once used to estimate the age of a fish. However, this method is now regarded as unreliable. Instead when the fish die, the bones in their heads called otoliths (oto’ meaning ear and lith’ meaning stone) are removed. These bones help the fish to keeping its balance in the water. When an otolith is removed from a fish, sectioned into thin slices and viewed through a microscope, it reveals a pattern of light and dark concentric rings. The only other way you can determine a piranhas age is to hatch it from an egg and record its growth.

a 7-8 years old rbp at 8" is stunted IMO, in 2-3 year of it's life it should reach that around size.
