I've always wanted CL's, but I dont buy them for fear that I've heard they're prone to get ick easily. The last thing I want is an ick breakout to affect the other fish in my tank.

I've had many experiences where plecos and tetras died on me because of a 40% waterchange. Water was most likely too cold.

If I was to take a gamble and get some cl's, how much % of water is it safe to change? Can I change 40% in a 75g tank?

How well do clown loaches take temperature fluctuations?

How well do they take stress and harassment from other fish? I'm just curious if they get ick instantly by stress from being attacked by another fish or soforth.

Try to match temps. of new water w/that in the tank and you will have no problems w/40%. What fish are in there that you need such a large volume changed weekly?

Well, first of all, ich will not appear unless you introduce a fish not quarantined at all. Always quarantine every new fish. Another, feed your fish various food. Vary the diet so they obtain different vitamins thus boosting their immune system.

Secondly, if your water is very cold, well then, use a heater until tank and new water's temps are evenly or closely matched. Clowns are very peaceful and should not be kept in less than 3 in number nor with extremely aggressive fish. Severe aggression can stress them and as they do not have scales, they are very prone to various skin diseases.

Lastly, be consistent with your water changes. Check your water parameters regularly and do as many water changes as you can to keep the water as clean as possible.

I have 7 bichirs, an indo dat, and 2 catfish.

I dont always change 40% though, maybe once every 2 months

Interesting. What size is the tank and how often do you feed? What species are these catfish? I can see why your fish are dying because of a 40% water change every two months. What are your water parameters? By doing water changes every two months, the fish are being shocked by the sudden changes in water conditions. Is there a reason why you are doing this every two months?

40% is sufficient weekly depending on the bioload however there are some of us who have done a larger water change volume yet we do not have issues about it. In fact, the more water changes are performed, the better for the fish.

75g and I feed once a day with heavy portions. The catfish are pimelodus blochii(four-lined catfish). The fish that died on me were tetras and pleco's. I do a 40% wc sometimes because I like clean water. Unfortunately, the water becomes too cold and the plecos and tetras died. This was in a separate tank btw.

Water changes should be done every week regardless of your excuse. Perhaps every 2 months you like clean water, but your fish must sit through 2 months of scum and crud. The water going in has to be the same temperature at the water already in the tank.

oh no i think everyone got the wrong idea. Sorry, i should've been more clear. I do 20-25% weekly, every 2 months or so I do a 40% waterchange.
