This spawn was a couple months ago but the fry were gone the next day. It won't happen again because I will pull the eggs from them. Casper is one that believes in domestic abuse and has been chasing just the female around the tank. So they haven't spawned again yet, but hopefully they will again soon. This is just an update for those that might still be interested...

So how pure is a Segrest marble convict?

Considering the number of Asian bred hybrid species of fish that Segrest sells, including cichlids, IMO one should view this and any offspring that it may be part of in the future as hybrids.

Hybrid from being mixed with honduran red points? Or are you saying marble convicts aren't pure? I'm just trying to get an understanding of what they are mixed with. I'm with you on Seagrest selling hybrids... Just not sure what you meant.

I simply meant that any vendor that sources large volumes of hybrid fish from SE Asia, cannot be truly trusted with regards ot the "purity" of any of their fish. I have always been of the belief that if one cannot trace their cichlids back to the point of origin, as in a fish with zero provenance, then the only responsible thing to do (at least if breeding & selling offspring) is to consider the fish a mutt of unknown origin.

While I understand that some people believe that they can simply eyeball a fish & dertermine its genetic profile with 100% accuracy, the reality is that no one can do that, except maybe superman. lol I have seen cichlids that appeared to be very pure, throw hundreds of very pure looking offspring, until one day many spawns down the road a few oddballs show up in the mix - obvious crosses from previous generations, even when the obvious cross hasn't been kept by the breeder in several yrs. It happens, more often than what some people care to believe.

Understood and as always I respect your answer. I'm not going to mass produce them by no means. Just wanted to show an update on him. I brought up hrp's because some have said he looks like a platinum hrp... But he DOES have a few black pigments in him that show now, so I just look at him as a marbled convict with lack of black marble.

Happy Mothers Day to all mothers!

Now as you can see... no pink. So I can go with white or platinum... Platinum sounds better to me! Lol
Most of the convicts that aren't black/grey around here look a lot like this one, as far as the barring goes. I have a couple myself.

I've never seen them QUITE like what you've got there, beautiful fish.

Thanks man. I wasn't thinking he was a one of a kind but I knew their wasn't many like him. He is different all the way down(or up) to his dorsal fin. He doesn't have one! It took me forever to figure out what it was about his look that seemed off. A few of his sibblings that didn't die off were also missing theirs. So I didn't look at the dorsal missing as an injury... More like a deformity because there where more than one like it. I don't plan on selling any fry to any stores because of that but I and a couple friends will raise and keep some fry from him. That's if or when they spawn again.

They're about 3 inches and the bars are still visible
