How rare is an Albino Plecostomus?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Just to set things straight, I will go back to see if they still have it, and take a photo. It was only like three inches long at the most. But I will post it when I return! Will be about 2 hours before I get them on here, just fyi, ok?:D

My bristlenose is more of a peachy color than white like the pick above. Is there a way to distinguish between albino and chocolate albino? He's also long finned and looks amazing when he shimmies up the glass. are long fins as common as albino?

They are pretty easy to to tell apart, a chocolate albino is more of a reddish color or a dirty pink and in most cases have dark eyes. I have seen a few that actually have red eyes but they are a dark red. Real albinos have a whitish to very light pink body with very bright red eyes.

The first link has albino chocolates in it and the second link has some of an albino sailfin
(Note: the non albino versions are also in the pics).

The hardest part to tell them apart would be the belly area... some albino chocolates have a light belly area.

I haven't any answer for you^. But I am a bit miff'd, the fish I spoke of was laying dead by a rock. The lady said that the person who works nights was probably getting a different fish out of there and didn't realize it had been caught under the rock..........:(........that's really crumby, it was a beautiful fish. And it was she said, an albino pleco. It would have gotten at least two foot long or so. Well, not any more. I guess it's in 'fish heaven', after going through the opposite! Idiots!!! Real bummer........

Thanks very much for the info! But i'm still unsure. In this crappy phone pic, he's in a shadow, but he glows pink in the light, and his eyes are a bright dark pink.

He's about 2" + a 1.5" tail. Was it worth $12? I'm satisfied either way =)

ps. his bristles are getting longer! I'm excited to see him grow up

Thanks Glabe.:) Whether it's rare or not, your fish is very pretty, and it's tail looks really nice too. Hope you can get some more pix for us! You can post some more of them on this thread, that's fine with me. :D You can also post them in one of the photo forums, then more of us would see your photos. Do you have any other fish in your tank with him?

If you are trying to connect my information with your BN. There is no albino chocolates for BN...only for Pterygoplichthys pardalis (common)

Here are a couple of albino bn plecos that are pretty rare I think, pictured with a common albino for color refrence. I have been saving these for future breeders but have not bred them yet because all of my lfs's have gone out of buisness and all thats is left is petco and pets mart and I wont shop or sell there. I have 4 of them total.
