how smart are rays?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Rays (elasmos in general) are VERY smart. I'd put them on par with some mammals. Definitly can do simple problem solving and it's been shown repeatedly they have the ability to recognize shapes and will respond to target conditioning. Many have also learned to swim into containers for moving back and forth between tanks/pools/exhibits, hold position for medical treatments (like ultrasounds) and things of that nature.

calgaryflames: They are not my words... its a quote...

but come on birds & mammals

One more time;

"The results of the study showed that elasmobranchs (sharks and rays) possess cognitive abilities that rival those of bony fishes, or even birds and mammals".

From what i understand this line states that they have abilities that is similar to those of birds and mammals. It does not say that they are on the same level/class of intelligence. And why should they anyway... They are adapted to different types enviroments... They have what they need to survive, in relation to those natural conditions they have been exposed to throughout thousands of years.

Nice video. Cool ya people say they are extremely smart. Some people are on the run with dolphins but i don't really believe that.

i'm in the process of getting my first ray. i am a marine bio student at uconn and i plan to target and shape train my rays

It wouldn't surprise me if their cognitive abilities rivaled that of some mammals. As far as intelligence goes not all mammals are built equal. Watch a dwarf hamster walk off of the corner of a table and hurt itself without even looking first and you'll see what I mean.

My leo has allready figured out that if he starts banging rocks around he gets fed. I think he has trained me
