How the heck did they know that?

It's true though, most ppl don't give fish enough credit. I was guilty of that too before I had fish. But it didn't take long before I realized they are a lot smarter than I ever ever thought or gave them credit for.

as soon as my fish see me at the end of the hallway 15ft away they swim up to the front of the glass.

my puffer begs for food (quite succesfully i have to admit) as soon as he sees me come down the stairs at the other end of the house

Isn't it sooo cute when they swim up to the glass when they see you? I get all smiley and happy...and yes I talk to my fish too...can't help it lol.

Pavlov did a conditioning experiment with dogs. The dogs were conditioned to respond to the ringing of a bell. The dogs heard the bell and began to salivate at the anticipation of food.

Your fish have been conditioned to respond to the visual representation of the yellow can as a source of food.

It's not that fish are NOT intelligent. This is just more of a case of conditioning.
