How Thick?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I can tell you that a 1" thick piece of laminated glass (2 pieces of 1/2" laminated together) WILL work at 10' long by 4' tall. I second John's suggestion on concrete. Just don't use sanitred to seal it. :D

If you can afford cell cast, then do that. If you do glass, I still stand by recommending laminated glass. Laminated has a film between the two chemically bonded pieces of glass, so that if it fails, it doesn't fail catastrophically. Think of a car windshield.

Good luck. I'm over a year into mine, and it isn't even close to being done.

LMAO Don't ask Wizzin That!!! LOL ... He's had some .. ummmm mm... issues with the company ... as have alot of other members actually... Pond Armour all the way!

Wizzin.. we're talking about a 5 foot window here... not 4... your about as into this thread as you are into your tank ...

ok so 2x8's? I wasnt sure of all the sizes... I feel kind of dumb saying that now. So I would still need 2x 3/4th plywood? even with the framing? Now Im thinking maybe ending up with a 11'x7'x5' tank. Ive been thinking about it alot today. If I could I would do the whole width of the room which is 14' But I thought that I should leave some room?

where will the tank be located ??:)

Im so sorry, I looked right past this! We built on a huge florida room on the back of the house, and we where going to build a storage closet in there to the left. After the windows where put in we decided we didnt want to make it, and now there is this huge space over there with no windows and thats where this will be going. Its kind of hard to explain but where it will be there is no sunlight hitting it.

You'll have to strengthen the floor for something like this as well... yeah I wouldn't do less than 2 x 3/4 as your looking at 5 feet of depth which is a crazy amount of weight on the wood... As for the Full width of the room... if your planning to sit on the filtration system to watch the fish ... ok (or if your running your filtration from a remote location like outside then it's all good) But if you need to have your filtration in the room with the tank then leave some space at the end for it and build it into a closet to clean up the look....although for a tank this size your prob going to need more than the 3 feet your leaving

Personally I would build it out from against the walls with enough space to squeeze by so that i could check for leaks from time to time as well as hide the filtration behind the tank where it won't be seen and more importantly it won't be heard from the viewing area. But if you build it 14 feet wide and keep it a few feet from the wall behind it... put a door to outside back there .. you could pretty much have the advantage of the width and have a seperate space for the Filtration... Just some ideas I've been thinking of for my own tank idea LOL

It may be safe, but I couldn't get the stuff to actually seal the tank! On their site, they show an image of a wicker basket sealed with sanitred holding water, yet on my tank, they claimed it wouldn't hold water because I didn't apply it properly. For something that is supposed to seal anything, it sure is touchy when it comes to actual application. I took pictures recently, just haven't put them up on how the sanitred stuff literally cracked and pealed off the glass for about the 6th time now. It may work on concrete, but it is worthless at the glass attachment.

I missed the 5 foot window part. I'm into my tank. Just not sharing :naughty:

Are you going to fill it to the brim of 5' ???

No I wouldnt fill it to the tip top. I was probably going to have a half a foot to a foot at the top that was going to be a wood frame. Im going to fill it to the top of the glass though.

I was wanting to put the filtering system under it if I could.

What would I have to do with the floor? Its cement right now.
