How to add Decholor

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I rigged up a system out of an IV bag that drips the dechlor into the hose as it flows to the tank.

I can't find Prime. Where is a good online store?

if all you're ordering is Prime, you'll probably get a new one ripped from the high shipping costs. if you don't have a petsmart around (they carry it) just check your local stores to see which ones sell Seachem brand products, and ask if they can order some Prime with their next shipment.

I drain 50%, add prime to the tank volume, and refill with filters running all along. No problems thus far.

Local fish stores, WOW that is funny:ROFL:I have one to chose from. I have learned the more I get into this, the more ordering I do online. I even have my own fed X account now.

I order Prime by the 2 litre, and including shipping, pay less than the 16 oz. size at the local PetSucks, or LFS either for that matter.
My local options are for emergency use only. I order all my stuff online now, and save tons of $$.
One large order every 3 months or so and I'm good.
$100.00 total online to my door in 2 days, or $250.00-$300.00 for the same or less locally. Don't take a mental heavyweight to figure that one out.
I'd like to support the locals, but they don't support me by ripping me a new one at 200% markup.

yes, it is safe to add dechlorinator to a partially-filled tank. as long as you add the dechlor before you start putting water back in, and keep filters turned off so any chlorinated water does not come into contact with the beneficial bacteria, you're fine.

keep in mind though that most people who do it this way use Prime. i don't know if other dechlorinators work within a different time frame.

It works with Stress Coat as well. I don't dose for entire tank volume though. I dose for slightly less that the replaced volume pre-fill, then while it's refilling I occasionally add a little more. Been doing it this way for years. I also order mine. For $4.99 (or so) for a 16oz. bottle which costs $12 - $16 at LFS,, I don't think so. However,, that is because I just found out about PetsMart price matching. I just got an Emperor 280 for $35 & would have had to pay $50 in-store. Just took the Dr.Fosters catalog with me. I also got some Lifeguard all in one 16tabs for $5,, would have been $12. in-store.
Point being,, If you can't get a price match, order it!

I personally fill my tank up using buckets of water, so i dechlorinate the water in the buckets before i add them to the tank.

you add your dechlorinator to the tank before you refill. You dose for the total volume of the tank.

You shouldn't dose for the total volume of the tank unless you are doing a 100% water change. The dechlorinator is there to remove heavy metals and chlorine from tap water, so you should only dose the new water that goes into the tank, otherwise you are unesarsarily overdosing it if you dosed the entire tank everytime.

.

I take it you don't have a python? That gets quite old with several tanks and or larger tanks. I like to workout but I keep it in the gym. LOL:grinno:
