  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Thanks I was planning on heating the pond the rare cold night/days we have but your right I wont see them breed in the pond never thought of that.
I might get 6 small ones for a 30 gallon tank as pair forms the extras will be put in pond.

Have you heard of the new fish club in Hollowood Miami ? It would be great place to sell your fry as no shipping required .

those were my first fishies i breed :o i was like 7 years old and my dad bought a pair of them for me :) they enjoined the aquarium i guess because in a month i had their eggs but only like 3 survived everything lol :P

Thanks Onion for great info. As the proud owner of 2 Firemouths I won last week I will use this info wisely.

I've got a 75 that's getting a little small for my lungfish, and was thinking about breeding a smallish cichlid. FMs look great. Quick question: would a standard 75 be large enough to support two pairs of FM or an FM pair and another small cichlid pair, or would this be too much excitement for one tank? I'm just worried about the tank looking empty. Thanks!

a 75g would be perfect for 2 FM pairs. Just don't put their breeding sites right next to each other LOL

So you think to breed mine i should get rid of my plecos? I'm already thinking about it. This really makes me want another one because the one I have now has very nice colors

Although people say it can't be done, I have seen two convict pairs in a 30 gallon cube tank with a footprint of 18" x 18". these cons weren't little either the males were around 4-5 inches.

lol, i've seen convicts breed in a 5g. They were small though ;)

Yeah convicts should be in a class of their own when it comes to breeding. Great article onion, lots of good info. The important thing I see is the use of sponge filters. They are the closest thing to baby proof Ive ever found. If you keep a few running in an extra tank and you need to suddenly set up another tank, emergency or whatever,Throw the sponge in the new tank and, bam, instant bacteria culture.
