How to breed jewel ciclids

Give the pair their own tank and you should have fry every 3-4 weeks. The fry can stay with the parents for a few days, then move them to a 5-10 gal. tank feeding fry food, ground up flakes and frozen baby brine shrimp.

In the fry tank all you need is a sponge filter and heater.

Good luck.

I always found with the smaller cichlids get a few in a tank and let them grow up and form pairs by there own this worked well with Angles and Rams for me. My dad used to breed them all the time if you go out to buy a pair buy a female that is a smaller then the male. Larger females seldom accept smaller males.

i have kept my fry with the parents for as long as 3 weeks. after 2 and a half weeks, they start to pick off the babies, so you really shouldn't keep them together for longer than that

remove the fry from the parents as soon they become free swimming to get max survival rate

A better question is "How do I NOT breed jewels?" Get a male and female together and they WILL breed. I got 5 so I could breed them for feeders. A pair formed and I got rid of the others. They breed about once a month...
The problem is that some of the babies I used to feed managed to hide in the plants and thrive in my main tank, and now they are breeding in there. I should care, but I don't, it's funny to watch 2" jewels chase off a 12" endli.
My point is they will breed if you have a male and a female, and then you have to figure out what to do with the babies... 'cause there will be lots.
