How to breed jewel ciclids

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I've got a 125gal with 3 Oscars-7-8"-I got 3 jewels and everything was fine until 2 mated and now I've got 40-50 fry, 1- 1 1/2". I figured the Oscars would thin them out to nothing but the jewels still won't let them near them! Will the female lay eggs again without taking the fry out? Will they leave the Oscars alone if she lays eggs ?
I'm finding alot of info here-it's great

I would recommend the same advice with Jewel Cichlids as with Convict Cichlids. I have seen both Jewels and Convicts reproduce far beyond the capacity of their owners, and I have seen both species beat up other cichlids twice or more of their size.

A better question is "How do I NOT breed jewels?" Get a male and female together and they WILL breed. I got 5 so I could breed them for feeders. A pair formed and I got rid of the others. They breed about once a month...
The problem is that some of the babies I used to feed managed to hide in the plants and thrive in my main tank, and now they are breeding in there. I should care, but I don't, it's funny to watch 2" jewels chase off a 12" endli.
My point is they will breed if you have a male and a female, and then you have to figure out what to do with the babies... 'cause there will be lots.

IM dealing with this issue right now. My first spawn was only about 25 the second seems to be in the hundreds. LOL

males usually have more blue spots than females and will sometimes get a small hump on their heads. they are much larger as well. when they breed the females turn completely red.
