How To Breed Red Terrors?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
It has been a while now go ahead and remove it just watch them closely. As I mentioned earlier you should look for 6 ft tank. If I remember right they may need to grow some yet before they will spawn. Red Terrors get to be quite a size 12 inches or more for males. They like to breed in a pot on its side or hollow in a piece of driftwood. Are they eating good now or still hiding a lot.

Leave the lights on during the day they will become more active. Having the lights off may have been part of the problem more so if it is dull room.
I can't mention enough though you will need a bigger tank. RED Terrors can reach 12 inches in length and may spawn sooner with more room. Ours spawned when they were about 7 or 8 inches.

They may still be to young are they getting along fine. The first sign of them wanting to mate will be digging a pit near a flower pot or hollow in a piece of driftwood. They will also do some lip locking it looks rough but is fine. You absolutely sure you have a pair Your female should be more red and have black on the front and top of her dorsal fin. The male will lack the black on his dorsal and should be a bit bigger. His color may even have a bit of blue in it and he should have more pearling all over him. If they do spawn you will have to watch close that he doesn't hurt her in a tank that size. Try heating your water to about 83 for a couple of weeks then do a water change and drop the temp to about 79. Sometimes this will trigger a spawn also keep them well fed on a high protein food to condition them.

You're tank is plenty big for a small pair like yours, I bred a pair the size of yours in 20gal tank. They will be finicky at first, but I've never used feeders, just a 4-5mm pellet works great. Did you ask the previous owner what their current diet was? That's could be a piece to the puzzle. Once they are hub fry enough, they will eat anything. Keep us posted, but these guys are tough and should be treated like nothing more than Red Convicts, they are as mean as convicts, only thing to be away of is their Bi/Polar personalities towards each other. Keep the divider in hand and I wouldn't leave 2 of them under attended together, buy that's my 2 cents. Good Luck! Let me know if I can answer any other questions?
