How to bring nitrate down

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
BLIMEY!! If President Obama keeps rays and see's this thread this could be the end of the special relationship between our two countries...LOL !!

For me there is no easy or simple way to reduce nitrates, certainly not on a grand scale to be cost effective, it requires hard work and dedication...unless your on a drip system that is, same difference though the water is removed and replaced by fresh.
WATER CHANGE...WATER CHANGE....thats my moto !

leave countries out of the debate. it's about filtration and reducing/eliminating nitrates. i'm not from either country, but it's uncalled for, especially when all of our countries, friends, families, etc have been hurt or killed for the same things.

keep on topic or don't chime in.

as for my personal experiences with lowering nitrates, you cannot go wrong with plants. i have a planted tank that holds its own and can go for extended periods of time without water changes, just top offs. i clean it roughly once a month, if that, and haven't had a fish death in over a year, and that was due to bullying.

+1 and then some, ive been trying to establish peace on this thread as well, anyone who gives an idea should not be shot down or for lack of better words if you dont have something good to say dont say it all!

Water changes, vac, plants and yes even fbf claim to help, havent tried em but they sound cool and so wonders for large pools or ponds.

As aquaman says, just change water BUT you need to check that the supply water is low in nitrates too or it will not dilute. Some supply water is nitrate high.

I run a 20 gal per day drip, grow pothos and do 20% water change every weekend without fail.

My belief is that pothos will grow rapidly in high nitrate water but it may not bring it down to zero.

My tank is a stable UNDER 20ppm measured on a high quality salifert test kit.

I have also used vodka dosed anearobic deltec drips which worked but was hard to keep stable, plus I used ion exchange resins but it is hard to keep recharging on 300gals.

even simple topics become slash each other on this club i
ts not how great you all think you are , but to help answer the darn question, what ive learned keeping fish for 30 years,
1 nitrates build up
2, either do water changes
3, or snake oil tricks like absorbing media

Lol yeah I had a simple nitrate question and it completely blew up into all different topics and arguments
