How to Buff 'em Up?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
About this deworming med, is it safe to be administered in the main tank? Most importantly, is it safe for the BB in filters?
Where do I get one of these meds and how to use it?

Yes, and yes. As far as where to purchase, you don't live anywhere near me, so I have no idea how to answer that? Locally? Online? Whatever works.
Praziquantel (PraziPro) works well for tapeworms, for roundworms you need to use something like Levamisole. Search some of my previous posts for info on both meds. Without ruling out worms there's not much more I can offer. A 5" male FH at 1+ years of age is not normal. Good luck.

HH, you can use my video as a small gauge for how fast these guys grow. And man i miss this fish!!!!!!!! He had the most personality of any fish I’ve ever kept. When he was about 5-6” I did a water change and i suspect my city had done a large chlorine dump and it killed him in like 2 hours. He was a low grade fish with one H3ll of an attitude.

So today I fed my FH his first live food, a superworm (gut-loaded with NLS pellets) and after a few hours I spotted a white round thing at the edge of the tank.. not really sure if it's white poop or something else..
If it's indeed white poop from intestinal parasite, then it may very well be the straw that breaks the camel's back...
To be honest, these few years of fishkeeping hasn't been fun for me.. I keep worrying about my fish diseases and tank related problems such as filtration and so forth that makes me frustrated all the time.. It's hard enough setting up the tank with one usable limb (I'm handicapped for those who are wondering) and not getting support from family regarding this hobby, but now I gotta deal with constant illness that always hit my fish no matter how hard I try to keep up with the maintenance..
In addition, I also try my best to establish a preventative measure for every fish that I keep but time after time, my fish are always hit with different types of illness.. Not to mention it's so difficult to get fish medications around here.. No one knows a thing about fish diseases or they try to sell me stuff that don't work.. Trying to find meds online isn't helping either as a lot of these meds don't ship to my country or they cost so much that I'm better off buying a new fish/tank..
I try not to be those irresponsible fishkeepers who go and buy fish then dump/kill the fish when something goes wrong and repeat the buying process without realizing their mistakes.. While it might mean nothing to them, I try not to go down this route.. To me, a life is a life and it's precious..
So sorry for my rant but I think I'll go crazy soon..

You live in Malaysia, so there are bound to be huge fish markets, correct? Pretty much all the fresh food found on such places from crustaceans to fish would be safe to eat, so long you do a visual inspection first. Might be a good idea as Hendre says to freeze all fresh foods first, unless bought frozen.

Sorry to hear about your disabled arm. You just gotta keep refusing to let that stuff stand in your way, and keep your head up.

I'f you often have diseases in your tank, then it's probably because of questionable fish-keeping practices locally, and with you mentioning how people buy fish only to kill and dump them later, this pretty much confirms that. It's big of you to recognize that fish are vertebrates with little lives of their own, when so many others around you do not.

A logical course of action would be to thoroughly clean the tank and filters to the point you're sure they're absolutely sterile, and then start anew. Keep more than one tank for quarantining your fish and plants, and keep them in quarantine at least twice as long as you need to. Set up some strict rules like this for yourselves to battle the shabby local fishkeeping culture, and be really adamant in following them. Maybe educate some local fishkeepers as well! ;)

Tearing your whole system down and setting it up again will more than likely be a gigantic hassle, but you would be one hundred percent(or thereabouts) in control of diseases entering the tank.

I did the same after having 3 Juvie flowerhorns develop bloat and another where the fins were just eroding away. I tore it completely apart. Boiled all media. Let the tank and filter dry for 2 weeks on my porch and then started fresh. I even did a fishless cycle with pure ammonia and refused to seed the tank from an established system out of fear of reintroducing something. My black Nasties are super healthy which feels good because they’re so sensitive
