Hi ,
im looking for how to build a large tank fillter for something close to 800 gallons , any information you have pictures of how you set these up ;ect..
will help me alot ,

Do a search for "DIY Sump" or "DIY Wet/Dry". You should get plenty of info to read and lots of knowledge to design one that suits your needs.

Cheap substitution.
 
Should not be too much, depending on the size of your container, the bio-media could be the most expensive part aside from the pump. You just need a PVC pipe for 2 dollars at home depot, old storage container (strong enough to hold water), and the holder for the media is an egg crate like this one:

You can probably get them at your hardware store. Only other thing you need is silicone to seal off the joints. For the filter media you can use scrubbies as they are very cheap.

I still haven't made one of these filters to full scale, but I will be once I make my 900 gallon pond.
 
Personally I used the skippy method on my pond, but I wished I used a sump instead. With skippy method your filter floss is under your bio media and is a pain in the butt to get to and clean
