How to care for Darters!

I dont think a paddle tail newt could handle the temps most of these native creek species need. Paddle tail newts have a rather small mouth thus wouldnt be able to eat your fish even if it was 4-5 inchs long.
I wouldn't catch and keep any darters unless you have LIVE food for them.
It took me long time to convert my darters to thawed glass worms and blood worms . If I didn't have live food the first few months they would have starved.
Now they eat anything but not initialy.

Ive kept a paddle tail newt, had it for like 6 yrs. Most NA streams species do well in 50-60 degree temps which is a tad to cool for Paddle tails. Mines mouth was small could only eat small guppies, mealworms, and other small worms. It was like 5-6 inchs long, only like 3 or 4 when I got it.Noto;3485045; said:

Darters do not require live foods (though it is really good to incorporate into the diet). They convert easily to frozen bloodworms and they can be used as a staple, and supplemented by other foods. if you have trouble getting them converted to frozen worms, try putting the worms in front of a powerhead or output of a filter. The movement of the worms will help give an appearance that the worms are wiggling, and the darters will strike.
