or as simmple as an unweighted hook with a worm, or another good way is nylon rope frayed out does less damage as trying to set a hook in thier beak.

I agree with the nylon rope.

It works flawlessly. If its frayed out and fuzzy the gar bites it and get's his teeth tangled in it .. you can just pull them in without injuring them.

Caught my Gar in the st johns river here in Jacksonville, unweighted pole with a nightcrawler (theres about 8 right around my spot, this one was the smallest, so i tried to grab him for my pond.....PRESTO! POND GAR!

*Anyone have a clue as to what type he is?

THANKS!

I read that before and thought it was a joke. The gar will actually bite a frayed rope?

They think its food?

wow great looking fish I didnt even know there were Gars in Florida (I just started getting into actually catching Fish in last 6 months )

I used to have the same problem. I used the smallest hook I could find on a steel leader. Hooked up a goldfish and pitched it out in front of the gar. Let him take it for a few minutes so he swallows it and you can get the hook in the corner of his mouth.

Then get him up on land ASAP before the soft mouth pulls loose.

Here is a longnose I caught.
