how to clean sand

I used the tan play sand only because it came with one of my used tanks I bought. I have heard though that pool filter sand works good too. You can get that pretty cheap at pool supply stores.
The only draw back to using play sand like from Home Depot is that you really have to rinse the crap out of it.

One thing you could try with the python (I haven't as I haven't switched to sand yet) is just turning the faucet down so the suction isn't as strong. That way you might suck up the crap and not the sand. Worth a try anyway.
 
Ive also heard that pool filter sand is heavy enough so that it doesnt get sucked up in a python, can anybody confirm this?
 
i've heard that too, it is a much larger garnule (sp?) then regular play sand. i do like the look of my play sand though, differnent sizes of rocks and stuff all about it
 
You can get a heavier pool filter sand no problem, and it won't get sucked up/into a siphon... it will lift and mix, but pull back from the bottom and it will just fall out...
