How to clear up green mercky water.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
UV Sterilizer is the "best" way.

UV is not the best method. That is a way to hide the problem. The best method to fix green water, is to find the cause, and fix that.

Wyld Fya i dont see what the cause would be its not in direct sunlight and im running a aqua clear 70 on it. The lights are on 10 hours.

Lights on for 10 hours and excessive nutrients would be the cause. 10 hours of light is far too much.

10 hours is not "far" too much....just a lil, maybe a couple hours. What type of lighting do you have? how often do you do W.C."s? It may not be right in front of a window but it is probably getting some light from somewhere.

Can't say how much light is too much unless you guys know something about his tank that I don't. Such as, for instance, are there any plants?

10 hours is excessive unless it is heavily planted, or VERY weak lights. Since he hasn't posted in the planted section once yet, I'd assume it isn't planted.

Getting rid of excessive amounts of nitrates would be a step in the right direction, and cutting down the lighting. If the water is green, I imagine there is a lot of nutriants for the algae to be thriving. Waterchanges...

Also, killing the algae off quickly is a very bad idea. This will cause a huge ammonia spike. So a blackout is out of the question.
