How to cut thick glass?

Thanks for the tips. Yeah it isn't tempered. I have used the lube on the smaller stuff and no issues. I know the one pass deal. The dims on the tank I want to cut down is 72"*18"*30". I would have loved this to have been 30" wide not tall but hey I can't complain as I got it for $30...lol...

I wouldn't be cutting the bottom of it and that would be the only one plausible to be tempered.

I remember reading everywhere that the cutters only worked up to .5" glass.

I was also torn about just getting a .5" pane of glass for a front and making it a 72"*30"*18" just not sure if the .5" at 18" would need a brace or not. Or if it would work out ok with the rest being thicker.

I originally got the tank as a set of windows for my ray pond to be built but I think I am going to make that different instead of a plywood build.

Still pondering ideas and some still involve cutting it so all the info is helpful. There really is no shop to cut glass around here to speak of.

If I were to try to cut it should I do the tapping to get it started to ease the cut?

I'll try to get an accurate thickness of the glass. Maybe a pic or so as well.

It doesn't matter what the thickness is, it is all cut the same way. Just look on YouTube. I saw a vid where the guy cut a circle out of 3/4" plate. Pretty amazing.

Yes older glass you have less success getting it to break where you want it to. A glass cuter told me to use duller glass cutter on old glass! Never tried that yet.

For thicker glass like half inch what works for me is to score one side then flip and score the other side, be precise with the lines being directly on top of each other.
I have cut lots of half inch glass this way. Works most of the time. If its 5/8 Glass like my 180g that can be more difficult. Good luck

I am i the middle of making a diy glass overflow box out of 3/8 (inside tank) and 1/2 (outside tank) all it takes is good and proper equipement and patients all you can do is try and see how it works out lol.
