how to cycle a tank fast

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
ok, thanks a lot for all of the help everyone. How will I know when the tank is fully cycled? I've never done a cycle like this before so I'm sorry for all of the stupid questions.

let some prawns rot in the tank for an ammonia spike

which is better adding prawns or ammonia? And once the ammonia spikes how do I bring it back down, thats the whole part I don't get

well if you add ammonia up to say 20 ppm (where a masters test kit is very good) you just wait a few days ,keep adding ammonia to maintain the level then first you should detect nitrite then nitrate . thats where you do a small water change add keep adding ammonia at the same level and if my memory is right you should detect low to zero levels of amonia and nitrates should keep building .

ok thanks, I already have a master test kit so I don't need to buy one. So once I detect zero levels of ammonia and the nitrates keep building I can then add the filters to my bigger tank?

well once ther is a drop in the ammonia level and you detect high levels of nitrates then you should be ok . there is a lot of info on the net about this type of cycling just google fishless cycling you will find a wealth of info
