How do you guys deal with algae in your aquariums with predatory fish? Wouldn't it grow extremely much algae in aquariums if you don't have a pleco or something to eat it? with species that would eat eventual tankmates I mean.

I hope algae is the correct word...

Some Plecos grow pretty large and have some major armor to go with it. Most fish don't really mess with these plecos. But for those that don't have them...little lighting and algae scraping is all it takes.

Magfloat:)

water changes and plants :)

If you reduce pollution (nitrates, phosphates), you reduce the very basis of algae growth.

All my pred tanks have plecos in them. My fahaka has taken some bites out of him, but nothing too bad. Otos can be another option as they typically are too small to be noticed by most monster preds.

depends how big the tank is but otos dissappear in a friends aro/dat tank when he tried it for the same reason. just use an algae scraper and lots of water changes. and the less light the better

To tackle algea the best way is :

  1. don't have your tank near any direct sunlight
  2. water changes are allways nessesary
  3. some people use magnetic algea scrapers, me i use a good old pot scourer plastic one won't scratch your glass/acrylic

stick with these 3 points and your algea should be under control.

I don't have a pleco in my 55 and I haven't for two years. I don't even bother with my magfloat anymore. It just doesn't grow algea. But then again my room is pretty dark because it only has one window and that one is usually shut because I forget to pull the blinds before I go to school. I have a very little amount of brown algea starting to develop but I am not worried about that because it actually looks good.
