How to detect ammonia without a kit?

kno4te sorry one more thing is 7.8 ok for a del? i know its not ideal but If im doing large enough water changes to prevent problems is it ok?

My tap water is at that range in my area and I have Senegalus, Endlicheri, Lapradei, and a Delhezi thrive for years with no issues. I have only had problems with the Ornate Bichir which come from the Congo.
