how to dim a bright light

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I did that but the mounting brackets only raised the fixture a few inches above the tank plus I can't have a hood on the tank because the mounting brackets are in the way. I don't want my piranha to jump out!

I've used pieces of tinfoil wrapped around parts of the bulb and it worked well. I have also seen someone use a slightly larger piece (in diameter) of pvc pipe, drill holes in it, and slide the bulb inside of it. You can drill less/more and smaller/bigger holes depending on the amount of light you are wanting.

If you get the peel and stick window treatments for fake stained glass and such you can use it on your glass lid that the light sits on to filter it. There are a couple different varieties of white, like rice paper, frosted, and distorted that won't change the color of the light, it just diffuses it. Just cut it and stick it to the outside glass surface and you're done.

^ Yep, flickering will most likely happen, at worst you'll fry the ballast from continuing to try to start it without enough power.

How about reducing the amount of time the actual light is on? Perhaps utilizing a timer for having the lights only on during optimal viewing periods? The rest of the time ambient light should be enough perhaps.. In fact I rarely use my over the tank lights.

How about using floating plants? My Ps love it! Besides, they remove nutrients and thus reduce algae growth. HarleyK
