not to answer for Justin, but from what i've seen, pond liners are definately cheaper than other methods...

Thanks, I just did a very quick google search and the cheapest I found was 40 cents per square foot before shipping. No idea where this stacks up price-wise compered to other liners.

If I get some free time later this afternoon maybe I'll do some math and compare it to epoxy and some other products.

klee- to answer, i am thinking somewhere in the range of 6 x 2.5 tall x 3 or 3.5 wide
i'd go longer, but i already have a free piece of glass out of a 150

Are pond liners really that much cheaper than other methods? Or do you already have one?

the cheapest i've heard of epoxy is around $70 + shipping + the "hazmat" fee, or whatever it is to ship

i think i've seen liners locally for .30 / ft ... but i'm sure i wont be able to now that i'm ready to build :nilly:

also, klee, do u know of anywhere to buy weld-on products? specifically the thicker stuff? i think its weld-on 80? then i could just fix my 450 :naughty:

I dont know of any places off the top of my head, but I'm thinking all you have to do is contact a plastics company. Have you tried looking in the phone book locally?

You're thinking of Epoxy Paints like Sweetwater. 100% Epoxy Resins do not require haz mat shipping.

There are some good epoxies in the $60 per gallon range.

At 30 cents per square foot you could apply $60 per gallon epoxy at 8 mils thick, which is probably a good starting point for a plywood tank, although I would go thicker.

Liners have a lot more waste since excess is either cut off the top and/or folded up in the corners. The excess with epoxy could be used to increase the mil thickness.

And obviously epoxy is on the expensive side of the available options so I've got to think some of the other sealers would compete very well with liners.

Liners are great for how quick they are to install and the minimal learning curve. However, once a window is added I can only suspect things would get tricky.

Regardless, my point is that if money savings is a primary concern then I'm sure liners are not the cheapest option. Shipping non-withstanding.

oh i also know a guy who has the pvc pond liners locally for 20 cents/sq ft...Its not as thick as the EPMD liners but its what i use for my pond.

klee-- the only place ive talked to that carries ANYTHING is American Plastics (on 5th) and they only sell weld-on 40, but not 80 :(

maybe its weld-on 18 i need?

its the stuff that is the "consistency of honey"

i was told i could use it to "puddle" in the corners, to help strengthen my vertical joints, much like silicone would in a glass tank

for some reason when my tank was built, the corners were only single-glued instead of double, and those seams came apart when the bottom failed. the tops and bottom seams were all double glued, and i think they could hold together if a bomb went off inside the tank

i haven't looked too hard yet ... i hate paying shipping if i can avoid it. i have most of tomorrow off, so i will really search it out.
i'm tired of dragging my feet on this repair, i NEEEEED to get it set up :naughty:
