You can have a waterchange system without a sump, but you will need individual overflows for each tank. The option to drill your tanks would probably be the best. Then you can setup an automated or manual control timer setup to change the water.

How often are you wanting to do water changes? How much water are you wanting to change? How many tanks are we talking about? Have you looked into drip systems? Have you tested your water to be sure that there is nothing harmful in it just to be safe?

Please do not assume that we do not want to help. There is a lot of information and multiple ways of accomplishing what he wants to do. He will need to decide for himself which method he wants to use.

I want to do as much as it takes to keep the nitrates down.. Tank would be the 240 now, maybe 30-40 gallons a day. I have never tested all parameters of my water but have been keeping rays for several years with good results.

If you are going to drill the tank, that will be the easiest option as far as overflowing the extra water. From there, you just need to decide how you will do the adding of the water. Couple options there.

1. Direct plumbing line - Turn on via valve or electronic actuator
2. Drip method - constant slow drip of water

would like to go drip, is there a way to controll how much water?

for a drip, you basically connect to a faucet, newly plumbed line, etc and then add a pressure regulator to the line. Then you just downsize the line to 1/4" tubing and install a drip emitter. Presto!
