how to do waterchange

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I turn off all my filters and heater, then use a python to clean out the waste and about 50% of the water. Then I add my prime treeatment before I reverse the flow of the python, and finally turn everything back on.........

yeah i dont know how much chlorine is in my water, never tested it. anyways i have a 240 gallon tank with a gar, silver aro, 4 bichirs, lima catfish, fire eel, 3-4 inch african arowana. so if i did 30-50% waterchange weekly and added prime but full tank dosage would i be alright. hao said he used to do this to his 10 gallon that had an african arowana and also to his big tanks.

Test your water, and if all looks well go ahead and try. you could do less of a change if you want to, and just keep an eye to see how your guys react. IMO i think they should be ok. Of the stock you listed, I have bichirs, a lima, and used to have my aro before he jumped. Never any issues. :)

I have 1 hose out the door into a flower bed and 1 hose from the kitchen sink flowing in to the tank. The first time I did it this way I measured how long it took to remove 25 gallons, and now I let it run like this for 10 minutes (which is about 20 gallons) then remove the "out" hose, let the "in" hose top the tank up to the appropriate level and call it a day.

I have good water, and haven't ever used prime or stress coat.

My fish love to play in the stream

ok ill try it out but how am i supposed to test it? what do i use?

Just pick up a little chlorine drop test kit. I've used the strips, but don't trust them 100%

You can pick up a master test kit at your local wal-mart in the pet department. Test strips aren't that accurate..........

I siphon all the poop then dose my tank. I never dose the full tank size... just seems like a waste IMO because the water in there should be good. I do overdose the amount that I replace tho. I just dump it into my tank then try to match the temp of my tap to the temp of my tank then fill 'er up!!! My fish seem happy and never show any signs of stress after a WC. They even swim around like they just woke up in the morning and had a hot cup of coffee.

This is the thread that swayed my opinion on the direct to tank method

:) My fish are either sensitive or spoiled or im paranoid (Maybe all three ;) im sure they would be alright with tap to the tank but I feel better doing it this way.

ok i see that alot of people have been doing this, remove water, then but hose straight in tank and add stress coat or prime. how does it work though, wont the chemicals only treat the tank water? just doesnt seem right. putting it in a bucket then adding chemicals then pump to tank seems better but i want a better method
thanks
