How to feed a funny Oscar.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
it's not the oil that attracts, but the garlic odor. no, not olive oil. garlic "juice" or maybe soaking food in fine powder or extract , then shake it off before feeding. you don't want strong garlic throughout your tank water.
however, I tried garlic a few different ways on my spoiled oscar and he tasted it, then spit it out. the strong form was too much for him, & the weaker kind he ignored.
as my name says: we spoiled him rotten. I think the only way he will go on pellets ONLY, is if I find him a tank mate who will compete with him for food. so far the only pellet he has eaten consistently is Hikari BioGold PLUS. but they don't make a large pellet size :-(
He liked Hikari food sticks when first tried, but refused them after 2 or 3 days. He is VERY stubborn, and ate nothing for over 2 weeks. Don't let yours train you. it's a terrible pain.
You can find treatments for possible parasites in the Freshwater Diseases section of forum.

oh, he could've gotten parasites from tank life too, not only in the wild.

I couldn't find crickets or worms, and there are only cockroachs .. D= D= D=
Yesterday I put a little fish for him, but he didnt attack the little fish..

I put the pellets on a garlic juice + fish meat solution during the night, and tried to give it for him in the morning, but he didnt like it, even my cichla attacked it (they spitted anyway) but the oscar didnt..

I also checked his belly, and looks fine, theres no bloat. Hes fat, with a wide body, and the belly seens to be proportional..

Just feed your other fish as usual...your Oscar will figure it out. You don't need to make a noose for your own hanging by offering him special things. Of course if you like to, I suggest freeze dried krill.

they love cockroaches, in fact some people raise special kinds for food :-o
there is one valid reason to see if he can be bribed to eat, that is to get his guts moving so you see if his poop shows signs of parasites. often their poop will be white/stringy.

you can give him another week of competition with the other fish for their regular food.
if he doesnt eat, then treat him for internal parasites.
see the freshwater diseases section of forum.
in any case, it shouldn't hurt to treat him.

MY fishes were also like that when I first bought them. After 3 weeks they started eating normally. He's just adjusting to the new tank. And the Oscar playing dead is a hunting technique that they do to trick their prey! :D
