How to get driftwood to sink?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have had a big peice of cedar and its been about 7 months and its still floating. I siliconed it to a huge peice of slate and some rocks and its still semi boiant. so depending on the size of the wood dont be in a hurry

Use fishing sinkers, lead can't rust so it won't harm the fish.

Ok not exactly the same issue as the initial poster so excuse me diverting this slightly...

But I'd love some driftwood/bogwood in my tank, i think it looks great but the prices at my LFS are insane!

I live near a wooded area and there's always loads of cool pieces, but I'm cautious to try and use them as I don't know what type of tree and if they would be safe for my fish.

Can anyone advise me on this?

Thanks guys.

How Do you get driftwood to sink??i have a big piece that wont sink??..?Please help.

What I do is I get those terra cotta bases like you'd use with a planter and I drill a hole in the bottom. Then I drill those into the wood. Put it in the aquarim and fill it with gravel to weight it down and hide the terra cotta base. It takes a while (months and months) but eventually it get's waterlogged. You can then take the base out if you want.

....and if all fails, put rocks and heavy objects on top of it.
I got some driftwood for my plecos at the LFS. Despite saying it would sink in six weeks time, it never did. I piled up rocks on it. I'll probably get nicer/ better driftwood later, this is a solution for now.

I drilled mine, drilled some limestone "flat rocks" and used nylon screws from the hobby store to attach both to each other.
Rocks are flat enough to be covered with sand, and heavy enough to not let the wood float.
I got wood in 30 minutes this way. No joke (I mean soak). :D:D

Oops, :eek::eek:
Rephrase to "I got DRIFTwood in MY TANK in 30 minutes this way". :nilly::nilly::)

The piece I'm now going to try to sink (finally just dried out) has been floating in my tank for over a year with no signs of sinking. I bought a piece of driftwood from the LFS that was supposed to sink right to the bottom and did (some "brand" name, cant remember what).

i had a big piece of wood too. i had to drill a holes in two rocks! two in each. i used stainless steel (wont rust) screws then to screw the wood to the bases.
