A second job may be the best way to increase your income. The only way to obliterate bad credit is to begin building good credit. You can do that by paying ALL bills on time and saving money. If your credit is so bad that you cannot get a loan you will need to put yourself into a position where you don't need a loan. I know that sounds dumb, but there are many contracts you can sign to re-establish credit, such as rental leases, equipment rental, cellphones, savings/checking accounts etc. Contact your creditors and try to establish a payment plan, even if it has gone into collection.
You may need to relinquish private transportation if it is too expensive right now. Having worked jobs before that took up to 70+ hours a week, a second job is unpalatable but perhaps necessary. You'd be amazed how little money you spend when you are too tired to go out and spend any!
It may help to contact a non-profit debt assistance corporation and ask for specific advice on improving your credit score. Getting a copy of your credit report may also allow you to see exactly which debits must be closed, paid off, or negotiated.
