how to get my Africans to grow a little quicker

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
What type of Africans are we talking about?
The only general rule of thumb that I would have with ALL African fry is very heavy daily water changes. If you have the time then you can change up to 90% (50% is more realistic) of the water each and every day.
I have found that Golden Pearls have helped an awful lot as well, and I believe that all fry would benefit from this food.

u can try this
large tank, more frequent water changes,a bit warmer water and feed high quality foods (look into the European shrimp formula)

Interesting about the garlic...........I spoke with a Hikari Rep. in April about the specific food designs and their specific function (I was more intersted in growing faster fry) and the sinking garlic pellets came up. He said they add garlic to the formula to intice the fish into eating their pellets. He said the garlic additive creates a strong odor making the food more easily found in the tank. First I'm hearing about the other benifits.

Regular weekly water changes, regular feedings of high quality foods, regular carbon changes, weekly cleaning of tank and filtration parts, water temps around 78 degrees, compatable tankmates and decor, no swings in the PH, Oxygen, lotsa swimming room, and whole lotta patience grows healthy colorful fish.

Overfeeding creates nothing more than poor water parameters and fat lazy fish.

changing that much water daily is unnecessary and a waste of water! Also unhealthy for the fish to be changing 90% a day any more than 30% water changes weekly does more harm than good IMO~

Unhealthy?
First I have ever heard of that.
Years ago Discus guru Jack Wattley performed an experiment with Discus fry. One tank was 20g and the other 10g. The 20g received 3 water changes per week, the 10g one per day...the fry in the 10g grew faster.

Why would fresh water be unhealthy?

If you go to some of the fish farms in Asia that do not even use filtration they change their water 90% per day.

Not sure if anyone mentioned it but having your tank temp at 76-82 will help them grow a bit faster as well as nls growth formula... Still can't say I would go as far as 90% daily but frequent water changes of up to 30-40% once or twice weekly can be a good way to go. Obviously if you have plenty of filtration changing your water more than once or twice a week is silly~

i've heard of some angelfish breeders that leave the fry tanks light on 24/7 to enhance growth. i'm not sure if this does more harm than good, but he swore it worked and has experimented with it

Do not feed dog food to your fish. Dog food is full of Mamalian protiens and fats which are severely bad for the health of your fish.
