if your impeller and housing are smooth and not filled with BB or detritus, the only thing to be done is allowing less buildup in the filtration media.

Make sure it's not loaded too full of media. If they get overcrammed then it will severely reduce flow. I made that mistake when I first started using canisters.

I may be stating the obvious but make sure aquastop levers are all the way down. Check hoses for kink.
