I have a 55g w/ sand. I'm currently running (2) Aqua Clear 70 filters. Each has a sponge, advanced polyfiber, carbon, purigen & bio rings. I've tried water change after water change from 20-75% same story. Do I need bigger filters or maybe a wave maker/powerhead for my flow that'll help my filters?

If its the debris sitting on the sand substrate I would add a power head like you stated .

What I do is sandwich pillow stuffing between my sponge and the bag of bio rings and the floss catches alot.
I think that's almost the same as using the polyfiber I'm using. Still no luck. Well it went down some but I want it all out. Maybe I'll add another layer of that

If you were to remove the carbon and add polyfill or just a larger sponge it will increase water clarity a lot. Carbon is not necessary unless removing medications from the water column.

Another is a simple air driven sponge filter. They polish really well, increase your bio capacity and are cheap to buy/run

Well here are some ideas you might want to tackle.

1) Has the tank always looked this way? Did you thoroughly wash the sand?

2) Maybe part of this is the beef heart. Fatty materials float and HOB's aren't necessarily going to suck up floating items.

3) Are you cleaning the substrate when you do a WC?

4) Are you rinsing the sponges and replacing the floss at least every other WC?

I really haven't seen a tank with issues like that even though I had quite a few with HOBs. But I always found debris in the substrate and didn't use beef heart. I also washed my gravel a pile of times to make sure it was as clean as I could get.

The poly should remove this if it got into the filter and the poly was being changed often, but I don't see how it would make it to the filter.

Just some ideas. A wave maker isn't something that would be needed imo, although I like them just fine, just not for this particular issue.

How often do you remove the sponge and give a good swishing in removed water during wc's?

Side note but if that tank is glass you might want to have those rock caves siliconed together. They could break a glass panel if one were to fall over. love those rock caves, I have a few of them as well. Is that a female in he bottom left?
