How To Grow A Large Dovii

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Thanks, he is really nice. Ken Davis always had good stock! I wish he was still doing it, he is a lot closer to me than Jeff Rapps, shipping was a ton cheaper. He's nowhere near as big as Mel's, but he's definitely on his way to being a real monster![/QUOTE]

Mel's is by far the largest on this site, an absolute beast. The largest I have seen in person was around 24 inches. Four years old is still on the young side, once he gets closer to 10 yrs you might have a chance he will be in the two foot range with the good care you are giving him.

Ya very nice indeed. It was just a weird angle the first pic.

Mel's is a giant!

I finally talked to Jeff Rapps today. He only had one large wild female, 12". I passed due to the price plus shipping being $300. I can't risk that kind of money getting beat up (maybe). It sold minutes later with a big wild male as a pair for $450 plus shipping! All in all, he had another large wild male that went for big money and some juveniles that are also now all gone.

So I guess I'm still looking.

I think I got a couple of decent pics of mine, I'll post them tomorrow.

This is Jeff's female I passed on, somebody is going to be happy!

I would get ahold of Gage at cichlid connections. He has imported a ton of huge wild male Dovii so I would bet he has at least one large female for you.

I'll check him out, thanks!

Sort of under the light...

I sure wish he would hold still under some light, his blues, purples, and greens are amazing. There's eight of those four foot T5's, but they're towards the back of the tank for access, I should move them towards the front of the tank and try some more pics. This is his house, now with gravel instead of sand and plants...

I need another bag of gravel, 150 pounds or so in there so far, still a little in the back not covered. I have removed all of the big leag litter with another recent water change. There is still a bunch of really fine organic matter in the water column. I'm going to try some new mechanical media to get it all out soon. He's settling into his new digs, the lighter gravel has lightened up his base color. His hump seems to be coming back, maybe he's happier with his redecoration. His appetite seems endless, he begs for food now (he didn't do this before) but I'm trying to keep the meals reasonable.
