I will be getting a small(4") FRT next week, and I want to have the best water quality for when he arrives. Other FRT owners, how have you done this?(what products do you use/recommendations do you have for me) Thanks in advance.

do you keep fish?

it's the same thing. frequent water changes, maintain your filter and filter media and the most important thing is to keep water parameters stable.

keep the water pH high, warm and a little salty (1 tablespoon per 5 gallons of water).

try to stay away from any chemical products for the water, I never use them and I have no problem keeping my animals alive.

How can I keep the ph high, I have read limestone rocks can maintain a high pH, but how do I raise it initially? Thanks

crushed coral apparently works. for my frt i dont need to mess with the ph cause the water in jersey is hard enough as it is.

I use crushed coral sand. Just make sure it's not abrasive...Other than that, just WCs. Not much too it, and FRT is a pain in the ass by turtle standards, but it's more tolerant than most fish.

Yes, high pH is good, but not too high. Our water is pretty hard here too. Just keeping it on sand has worked out for now here.

A huge filter! That will help with water quality all the time.

I disagree with you on the Fly being a pain. They are not as hard to take care of as people think. Its just the size that becomes problematic for people. Not requiring a basking area alone makes the fly river a lot easier than most turtles. I keep about 80 species/subspecies of turtles, Pig nosed turtles are not even close to being one of the hardest species to keep.

make sure you know your source ph before trying to adjust anything.

Congrats on the turtle!

My advice would be to keep medication nearby. Because no matte how careful you are a fungal infection is bound to happen. I like pimafix and salt others prefer accriflavin.
