I've been formulating a plan over the last couple of months on how to build a plywood tank around 10- 15,000 litres (whatever that is in gallons). I already know how I intend to filter it, but my biggest issue is how I will heat it especially as it will be outside. Would it be possible to use a hot water pool pump?

Any suggestions welcomed.

You live in Washington state and you use metric? 2500g-4000g

hot water pool pump?

Do you mean a pool heater?

If so, then yes, either gas or electric. Solar too.

Insulate the walls and bottom well and make an insulated cover too for bad days.

Or a plastic greenhouse sort of thing over it if you don't want to cover it.

TBH im surprised youd even need to add extra heat in your neck of the world.

Ugh? I thinks hes in Perth, Western Australia mate ;)

LOL.......I live in Washington State and I thought...."Where in Washington is Perth?"

Australia.... well then...Gooday Mate...lets put another shrimp on the barbie.

You ol yanks think Perth is like the amazon. Believe me you need heating. My instant reaction to heating it would be to buy some riducusoly large water heater and put it in the road of a high output filter. Like a pond filter or something. Just for the record, 10,000 Litres = 3780 Gallons.

Aquasonic Australia make a nice computer controlled solar heating unit for aquaculture which is about AUD$1000 not including water pump. Essentially small black tubes laid on the roof or sunny area. Set and forget and accurate to 0.1 degree Celcius. If you get realy cold winters and its outdoors, I would use a bubble wrap tent/cover over winter and look at gas inline systems. You can modify a house system fairly easily.

A gas heated system would be cheap to run. Knowing how John Howard is gonna increase electricty prices by 11% or something.

LOL... yeh good ol western Australia. And yes our winters do get fairly cold maybe not in the minus but down to a few degrees on many winter nights. Hey fishdance do you have a link by any chance on that aquasonic solar system? I was thinking of creating my own using mirrors based off what a guy who does a bit of aquaculture uses, but that would still leave me winter as a problem plus it wouldn't be a very consistant method. hmm gas system hey, anyone know of a DIY step by step plan anywhere?

Cheers for the input guys.

Watching the wether (help me with spelling) this arvo It was 13C as the lowest. 20C max. Heting it a must. A chiller would be great as it gets over 36 aswell. Damn Global Warming.

I was hoping I could avoid using a chiller, guess the only way to find out is use a pool and insulate it and see what the temps get to in summer. Oh and it will be sheltered.
