I plan to make a trip to my parents' house where they have a large pond/small lake with some largemouth bass and other fish in it.

I'd like to go catch a bass and keep it, but I have a few questions.

1) I assume you can't just take it from the pond and put it in treated tap water, so how do you acclimate the fish to tap water?

2) Obviously it's best to quarantine the fish for a while, but how long? What do I look for? Should I treat it for parasites or anyhting else just as a preventative measure?

sorry this wild caught thing is new to me and I don't want to kill the fish or my other fish.

if it was a healthy fish i don't see y you couldn't just add him to a tank with tap water, dechlorinated, of the same temp. if u are worried then u can do a drip acclimation and slow drip at water into the pond water and go that route.

Adding him to treated tap water should be perfectly fine... As far as quarantining I believe the idea is to just keep them in a tank to themselves and watch them for a couple weeks to a month to make sure they don't have any visible infection or parasites, white stringy feces, eating normal, etc. Besides that I don't see the point in spending money on meds if you see no need to use them based on the fish's demeanor and such over the quarantine time but that's just my opinion.

Since you're talking about keeping a bass, I have to ask...what size tank are you planning on keeping it in?

I keep metro on hand because of my mbuna, and at one point I had a lot of fish being delivered, so i stocked up in case some came in with bloat. I find this stuff is quick an effective for treating parasites, and usually only requires one dose since my tank conditions are always in good shape.

the problem is that I don't have a spare tank for quarantine, just some tubs I can fill with water, so I won't be able to get a good view of the fish during this time

currently it's a 125, plans to go much larger as soon as needed, or sooner. I know bass get large, but it shouldn't hit 18-20 inches in a year...

btw no regulations in my state on private lakes/ponds for size, so I can start with a 10 inch fish

Isorry this wild caught thing is new to me and I don't want to kill the fish or my other fish.

You plan on putting an up to 10" bass in with Mbuna, and expect it not to kill them all? Ha. Good luck. As soon as the bass gets about 50% bigger than the other fish, it will eat them. No way around that.

And a 125 gallon is WAY to small for even a medium sized large mouth.

As for your other questions, I don't have bass, but I do have WC Sunfish. I really didn't do much to aclimate, though the pond I caught them at is a backup pond for our water supply so parameters were pretty much in line to begin with. I just put them in, though I put 6 in at the same time (tank was already cycled). They pretty much hid for the first few days, but after that they became much more active.

i never said the bass is going in with mbuna, I'm not stupid. you think I have just one tank?

The way you worded your last response about not having a spare tank for quarantine, and knowing you were worried about it killing other fish made it sound like you only had one tank.

So right now it is in a 125? What else in in there with it? Without knowing that, we can't tell you if it will kill everything.

one 12inch fl gar in the 125, no bass yet, or anything else for that matter, trying to get my stuff straight before i do this, if i do this

when you say a 125 is WAY to small, it makes me think i need an 8 foot tank for one, but you admittedly don't keep them, so...
