LMB get big fast and will outcompete the gar for food, if you were thinking about housing them together. It didn't work well for me in a 300, and the bass was 1/2 the size of the gar. The 125 should be ok until the bass gets to 10 or 12", then you'll need at 2' wide tank. Maybe start with a 6 or 8" fish so you can use your 125 for a few months.

edit: I had a few fish lice on my LMB when he was caught. Picked them off and treated the fish in a well oxygenated livestock tub for a week using praziquantel.

when you say a 125 is WAY to small, it makes me think i need an 8 foot tank for one, but you admittedly don't keep them, so...

you are correct, I don't keep them. That is because all the research I had done on them, and discussing with people who do have them, it became clear to me they need at least an 8' long tank. I don't keep alligators either, but I am pretty sure I can't leave one in my bathtub.
