How to level a big tank??

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I believe he means, you'll need a level first. How else are you going to know when your tank is level?

You could use your tank as a level. Water seeks level. You could fill half way then measure from top of water to top of tank. This would get you in a safe area of being level. Or you could make a water level using you Python water changing tube. Remove hose from sink fitting and remove syphon from other end. So your left with just the clear hose. Fill hose with water(we add food coloring at work to make it easier to see water). You want the hose to be empty about 12-16 inches on each end. Have one person hold one end of hose at one end of tank lining up water line in hose with top of tank. With second person holding other end of hose at other end, the water line in hose will show level. Make sure no air bubbles in hose.

That's all I can think of and I am well aware of that tool but his wording threw me off.

Just to throw in my two cents. As a former builder, wood shims is not the way to go here. I you just put them in where needed to get it level you are leaving a lot of the stand in unsupported. On a tank your size this could lead to disaster. I would cut long shims out of a 2x4 that will cover the entire length of the stand. That being said, I did use wood shims on my 90 gal but my stand is so overbuilt that there is no flex. Hope this helps.

Your tank should be level in all directions.
